In Germany alone, 400,000 new resi\u00adden\u00adtial units and asso\u00adci\u00adated commer\u00adcial and public build\u00adings are expected to be built each year, but only half of this demand can currently be met. Mean\u00adwhile, the construc\u00adtion sector itself is facing serious chal\u00adlenges: produc\u00adtivity has been stag\u00adnating for years, the consump\u00adtion of resources and energy in construc\u00adtion is consid\u00ader\u00adable, the volume of waste is substan\u00adtial, and the cost of mate\u00adrials and raw mate\u00adrials is rising rapidly. Automa\u00adtion can provide solu\u00adtions here. We incor\u00adpo\u00adrate them as para\u00adme\u00adters for archi\u00adtec\u00adtural design right from the start,\u201d says Dr. Felix Amts\u00adberg, coor\u00addi\u00adnator of the wood plat\u00adform at IntCDC at the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart. As a trained carpenter and studied archi\u00adtect, he combines aspects of prac\u00adtical crafts\u00adman\u00adship with the constraints of design, tech\u00adnology and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSCHUNK\u2018s exper\u00adtise in automa\u00adtion, robotics and handling is very impor\u00adtant for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><cite>Matthias Buck, Managing Director BEC<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flex\u00adible manu\u00adfac\u00adturing solu\u00adtions in construc\u00adtion with SCHUNK compo\u00adnents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with the system inte\u00adgrator BEC, a mobile, robot-based produc\u00adtion plat\u00adform was recently devel\u00adoped that handles, processes and assem\u00adbles wooden compo\u00adnents as required. \u201cWe get to turn ideas from science into actual systems,\u201d explains BEC Managing Director Matthias Buck. \u201cTo do this, we use suit\u00adable tech\u00adnical compo\u00adnents and modules that meet all require\u00adments in all direc\u00adtions \u2013 they must be reli\u00adable, flex\u00adible and future-proof.\u201d The core of the research package was a robotic system that is sent in full as a mobile factory to a timber construc\u00adtion company, a work\u00adshop or a construc\u00adtion site. \u201cOnce there, the system can support the work as needed \u2013 for example, chip\u00adping, assem\u00adbling, glue-binding, gluing or nailing larger wooden parts on site,\u201d says Matthias Buck. \u201cThe heart of the system is the SCHUNK quick-change system SWS\u2011L that enables the robot to auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally pick up and put down any end effec\u00adtors, for example grip\u00adpers, saws or milling heads. We relied on these SCHUNK compo\u00adnents because we wanted to take advan\u00adtage of the bus tech\u00adnology used in the inter\u00adchange\u00adable system to keep wiring to a minimum,\u201d Buck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In focus: perfor\u00admance, flex\u00adi\u00adbility and future viability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant is designed to keep all options open for maximum future viability. \u201cWe initially want to use the system to solidly and reli\u00adably imple\u00adment the current project and also realize new projects in the future.\u201d The robot, a Kuka KR420\/R3330 with a payload of 420 kilo\u00adgrams, travels on a BEC linear axis, the seventh robot axis, which is perma\u00adnently inte\u00adgrated into the container plat\u00adform. The change system SWS\u2011L from SCHUNK, which can hold up to 1,300 kilo\u00adgrams, is the robust inter\u00adface to the tool. For example, it is possible to visu\u00adalize the readi\u00adness of compo\u00adnents during the plan\u00adning phase. Mate\u00adrial-specific robotic construc\u00adtion processes can signif\u00adi\u00adcantly influ\u00adence new forms of human-machine collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion. \u201cSCHUNK\u2018s exper\u00adtise in automa\u00adtion, robotics and handling is very impor\u00adtant for us,\u201d Matthias Buck confirms. And he continues: \u201cThanks to their flex\u00adi\u00adbility, we use quick-change systems and other compo\u00adnents from SCHUNK in various projects. The tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adical connec\u00adtion between the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart, BEC and SCHUNK had existed for quite a while. The quick-change system (SWS) consists of a quick-change master (SWK) and a quick-change adapter (SWA). The SWK mounted on the robot couples the SWA mounted on the tool.
