The aim of IPAI is there\u00adfore to ensure that arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence is substan\u00adtially inte\u00adgrated into the prod\u00aducts and processes, i.e., the value chains, of our partner compa\u00adnies. We are a region of medium-sized global market leaders and family-owned compa\u00adnies. But if we miss out on AI as a compet\u00adi\u00adtive factor, we will no longer continue our long history of world market lead\u00ader\u00adship. Because we will suffer from disad\u00advan\u00adtages in terms of costs and inno\u00adva\u00adtion. We are convinced that compa\u00adnies can only be fit for the future with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sustain\u00adable future only works with&nbsp;AI \u2013 do you agree, Mr. Gess\u00admann?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#009ee0\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gess\u00admann:<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong> Yes! We see exactly the same at SCHUNK. That is why we have been a strategic partner of IPAI from the very begin\u00adning. We see that AI helps us to remain compet\u00adi\u00adtive and inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive \u2013 both in our own manu\u00adfac\u00adturing and in our prod\u00aducts and services. When IPAI was launched, it was imme\u00addi\u00adately clear for us that, as a tech\u00adnology pioneer, we wanted to actively shape the future. Here, we can bring in specific prac\u00adtical cases from SMEs and explore and imple\u00adment them more quickly together. The field of AI is too large and too impor\u00adtant to manage it alone. Ulti\u00admately, it\u2019s about helping compa\u00adnies to benefit from AI. And SMEs in partic\u00adular benefit from joining forces in an ecosystem. I see IPAI as a shared economy plat\u00adform for applied AI. Take the regu\u00adla\u00adtion of AI, for example: very few compa\u00adnies have the capacity and exper\u00adtise to examine how AI regu\u00adla\u00adtions affect their own prod\u00aducts and value chains. It is better to find it out in collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion. An envi\u00adron\u00adment like this also attracts sought-after special\u00adists for SMEs which like to work openly and coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtively. SCHUNK is the proto\u00adtype of the kind of company we want to have here: owner-managed, sustain\u00adable and inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive. A company that takes the future into its own hands. And that is impor\u00adtant for us: compa\u00adnies should not just see us as a means of marketing their prod\u00aducts and services. For example, when a new mill\/turn machine arrives at our plant, everyone is happy. Our employees are really enthu\u00adsi\u00adastic about getting their hands on it and trying things out until they have mastered the machine to perfec\u00adtion and can use it to manu\u00adfac\u00adture best-in-class prod\u00aducts for tool\u00adholding and work\u00adholding, grip\u00adping and automa\u00adtion tech\u00adnology. Each company is of course respon\u00adsible for its own AI projects, but can decide how much knowl\u00adedge it shares with others&nbsp;\u2013 in work\u00adshops, hackathons or even just waiting at the coffee machine. I have noticed that SCHUNK is one of the compa\u00adnies that focuses partic\u00adu\u00adlarly strongly on exchanging ideas. In prin\u00adciple, it\u2019s simple: the more you put into the network, the more you benefit from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#009ee0\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gess\u00admann:<\/mark><\/strong> SCHUNK has its own office and six work\u00adsta\u00adtions at IPAI. With the <strong>2D Grasping Kit<\/strong>, a camera recog\u00adnizes the work\u00adpieces to be gripped with the help of an AI soft\u00adware devel\u00adoped by SCHUNK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart tool\u00adholder <strong>iTENDO<sup>2<\/sup><\/strong>, which uses real-time machining data for process moni\u00adtoring, was devel\u00adoped using arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence to eval\u00aduate the data. SCHUNK provides intel\u00adli\u00adgent soft\u00adware modules in the NVDIA Omni\u00adverse for the digital<strong> plan\u00adning<\/strong> and<strong> simu\u00adla\u00adtion<\/strong> of complex auto\u00admated processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is also used in internal processes: the specially devel\u00adoped <strong>SCHUNK&nbsp;GPT<\/strong> increases effi\u00adciency in areas such as engi\u00adneering, marketing, sales and soft\u00adware devel\u00adop\u00adment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where do you see oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties in the use of AI?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#009ee0\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gess\u00admann:<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> We use it to increase our customers\u2019 produc\u00adtivity because AI accel\u00ader\u00adates and opti\u00admizes automa\u00adtion processes \u2013 or makes them possible in the first place to secure busi\u00adness in the long term. One example is AI-supported object recog\u00adni\u00adtion via camera in robot-conrolled handling appli\u00adca\u00adtions: Users no longer have to spend time program\u00adming and teaching the robot; the system largely under\u00adstands its tasks itself. This means that many auto\u00admated processes can be imple\u00admented for the first time ever. And others will be easier because they do not require SMEs to have special\u00adists with program\u00adming skills. We are not only facing a lack of skilled workers but also workers in general. And we have our own SCHUNK GPT, with which we are imple\u00admenting more and more appli\u00adca\u00adtions in the areas of devel\u00adop\u00adment, sales, marketing, and in knowl\u00adedge manage\u00adment, increasing our produc\u00adtivity in all those areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Society is also skep\u00adtical about the use of AI. How do you build trust?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#009ee0\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gr\u00e4ter:<\/mark> <\/strong>That is an impor\u00adtant point. Because if we want to benefit from AI, we can only do so if we trust this tech\u00adnology. This is nothing new in prin\u00adciple with tech\u00adnology&nbsp;\u2013 you also have to trust a car or an airplane if you want to use it safely. AI is complex and a black box for many people. That is why we want it to be trans\u00adparent and compre\u00adhen\u00adsible. We have now opened a visitor center for everyone in IPAI SPACES, where, for example, it is clearly shown how a neural network works: When the AI \u2018considers\u2019 whether it is seeing a zebra or an elephant \u2013 what is actu\u00adally happening? The aim is to estab\u00adlish a Euro\u00adpean center for AI tech\u00adnology. IPAI is designed as an inno\u00adva\u00adtion ecosystem in which compa\u00adnies, public insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, insti\u00adtutes and research facil\u00adi\u00adties work together on AI topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In summer 2024, the first dedi\u00adcated building, \u201cIPAI&nbsp;SPACES\u201d, opened with a visitor center, real labo\u00adra\u00adtory and co-working spaces.
