At Mack Alusys\u00adteme, preci\u00adsion is down to a hundredth. Produc\u00adtion Manager Dominik Isele puts it in a nutshell: \u201cWhere others stop, we start.\u201d A promise that is appre\u00adci\u00adated by customers from the aero\u00adspace, rail\u00adroad, elec\u00adtronics, auto\u00admo\u00adtive, and general engi\u00adneering indus\u00adtries. The prereq\u00adui\u00adsite for preci\u00adsion manu\u00adfac\u00adturing made in Klettau, Baden-W\u00fcrt\u00adtem\u00adberg, is a state-of-the-art suite of machinery. For some time now, this has also included the five-axis milling center DMU 95 monoblock with a PH Cell 300 pallet automa\u00adtion system. \u201cThe system is a top performer,\u201d empha\u00adsizes Isele. The VERO\u2011S quick-change pallet system from SCHUNK is at the heart of fully auto\u00admated compo\u00adnent machining. It serves as a pallet changing unit, a robot coupling, and for work\u00adpiece direct clamping and thanks to these flex\u00adible func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties cannot only handle several tasks but also cover different compo\u00adnents with just one device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spindle runs 24\/7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Machining on the machine takes some time due to the complexity of the compo\u00adnents. It was there\u00adfore impor\u00adtant to Isele to provide a stock of clamped parts of prefab\u00adri\u00adcating blanks. The machine can then process this stock succes\u00adsively and auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally. \u201cOur aim was to maxi\u00admize the spindle running time and to fully auto\u00admate the pallet infeed and outfeed,\u201d confirms Isele. Mack has achieved this goal with the VERO\u2011S clamping system from SCHUNK. The spindle is in oper\u00ada\u00adtion 24\/7 thanks to the pre-prepared pallets in the pallet station, and the fully auto\u00admatic supply and removal of pallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access from five sides<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However, speed and effi\u00adciency are not the only require\u00adments Isele has for the new machine. \u201cWe\u2019ve got aluminum profiles that we have to machine on five sides. Good acces\u00adsi\u00adbility was there\u00adfore impor\u00adtant to us,\u201d he says. The direct work\u00adpiece clamping system WDM-5X from the VERO\u2011S modular system of SCHUNK completely convinced him with its optimal work\u00adpiece acces\u00adsi\u00adbility during five-sided machining. The pillar clamping prin\u00adciple of the WDM-5X enables pene\u00adtra\u00adtions across the entire work\u00adpiece \u2013 natu\u00adrally without an inter\u00adfering contour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The base modules WDM-5X serve as a basis on the pallet. Different processing heights can be imple\u00admented with combin\u00adable stacking modules in different heights. The clamping pin connects the work\u00adpiece to the clamping pillar. Mack uses the dove tail version of the clamping pin. \u201cIt gives us several advan\u00adtages,\u201d enthuses Isele. The clamping pin allows direct clamping of flat work\u00adpieces, which have a clamping depth of just 3.5 millime\u00adters. This opens up new possi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties for processing thin work\u00adpieces, mold halves or free-form parts. Its trape\u00adzoidal shape addi\u00adtion\u00adally increases the contact surface through which clamping forces are absorbed. In turn, this enables a lower clamping depth for a force-fit connec\u00adtion. \u201cThis saves us raw mate\u00adrial and we didn\u2019t have to make any changes to the mate\u00adrial purchase order,\u201d says Isele happily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get started auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally well prepared<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pallets with the WDM-5X modules and the blanks are set up in a sepa\u00adrate, ergonom\u00adi\u00adcally designed set-up station. Manual set-up is so simple that even unskilled workers can do it. The pallet with the clamped work\u00adpieces is then picked up by the robot, stored in the pallet station and fed to the machine when requested. The robot coupling VERO\u2011S NSR 160 is the inter\u00adface between the work\u00adpiece pallet and the robot. The high pull-down force on the robot-side clamping pin has such a high holding force that even heavy pallets can be handled reli\u00adably. Produc\u00adtion Manager Dominik Isele is completely satis\u00adfied with the clamping system: \u201cEvery\u00adthing fits together, finding the solu\u00adtion with SCHUNK, the imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of the design, and the flex\u00adible clamping system itself.
