Mr. Ketterer, what devel\u00adop\u00adments are you observing at present in indus\u00adtrial automa\u00adtion?<\/h4>\n

Cobots are making strong headway into automa\u00adtion. The light\u00adweight robots are rated highly due to two major advan\u00adtages: They can be put into oper\u00ada\u00adtion easily due to their simple oper\u00adating and program\u00adming inter\u00adface\u00adsand, their design is to compli\u00adment the work of their human colleagues through collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive inter\u00adac\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

This is creating new needs in the market. Indi\u00advidual compo\u00adnents are no longer enough, our customer wants solu\u00adtions for complete automa\u00adtion processes. SCHUNK is happy to respond to this request and share its exten\u00adsive expe\u00adri\u00adence and exper\u00adtise: We no longer see ourselves merely as a compo\u00adnent manu\u00adfac\u00adturer, rather we work out complete solu\u00adtions along with, and for our customers.<\/p>\n

So SCHUNK is changing its focus?<\/h4>\n

No, we are not changing our focus, we are merely expanding it. We sense an increasing need for inte\u00adgrated solu\u00adtions. The focus is no longer on the indi\u00advidual compo\u00adnents with their tech\u00adnical spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions, but on the complete customer process with its perfor\u00admance values. To this end, we have all the building blocks in house or, where neces\u00adsary, are extending the range of services together with our part\u00adners.<\/p>\n

What does that look like in prac\u00adtice?<\/h4>\n

In December 2020, we commis\u00adsioned our robot appli\u00adca\u00adtion center CoLab in Hausen. Several robots and cobots and a team of appli\u00adca\u00adtion engi\u00adneers now work here on vali\u00addating customer appli\u00adca\u00adtions. Our customers can verify their require\u00adments and work\u00adpieces there in a genuine work\u00adshop envi\u00adron\u00adment that is very close to reality.<\/p>\n

Together with the customer, we deter\u00admine the feasi\u00adbility and assemble the correct selec\u00adtion of required hard\u00adware and soft\u00adware compo\u00adnents. Our large network of system inte\u00adgra\u00adtors also enables us to support customers in imple\u00admenting their solu\u00adtions.<\/p>\n

Opti\u00admally designed: SCHUNK appli\u00adca\u00adtion engi\u00adneers will find the ideal overall solu\u00adtion for indi\u00advidual handling tasks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Do you have any exam\u00adples of this?<\/h4>\n

Customers approach us when they want to know, for example, whether a magnetic gripper can grip certain work\u00adpieces, whether a wafer can be handled with ADHESO gripper tech\u00adnology in the spec\u00adi\u00adfied cycle time and deposit accu\u00adracy, or whether a fender can be polished auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally. We handle all these customer requests with thor\u00adough vali\u00adda\u00adtion of the customer\u2019s actual process in the CoLab.<\/p>\n

To conclude this vali\u00adda\u00adtion, we draw up a detailed report including image and video mate\u00adrial. This in-depth consul\u00adta\u00adtion creates further added value for customers and those inter\u00adested in automa\u00adtion. After a prelim\u00adi\u00adnary discus\u00adsion and performing the neces\u00adsary tests and exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtions in the CoLab, the customer subse\u00adquently receives our appli\u00adca\u00adtion report; in which we recom\u00admend prod\u00aducts or systems. We thus reduce the tech\u00adnical risk to a minimum during subse\u00adquent imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion in the robot cell.<\/p>\n

That sounds good. Do customers benefit from the CoLab in other ways?<\/h4>\n

Yes, because we develop new prod\u00aducts and services. For example, the SGC appli\u00adca\u00adtion kit for auto\u00admated handling of randomly arranged parts. This consists of a camera, the 2\u2011finger EGH parallel gripper, image processing soft\u00adware and acces\u00adsories, and soft\u00adware modules for inte\u00adgra\u00adtion into the robot controller by Universal Robots.<\/p>\n

Due to the perfectly matched compo\u00adnents, the customer can commis\u00adsion and configure the appli\u00adca\u00adtion quickly, easily, and without needing any knowl\u00adedge of indus\u00adtrial image processing. With this type of complete package, we make it easier for end customers and inte\u00adgra\u00adtors to auto\u00admate their tasks faster and with a lower tech\u00adnical risk.<\/p>\n

Under\u00adstanding the customer: In the CoLab, appli\u00adca\u00adtions are created that are tailored to industry require\u00adments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Is the CoLab aimed at a specific target group or industry?<\/h4>\n

The CoLab is acces\u00adsible to all customers and has been very well received right from the begin\u00adning. Here, we test the feasi\u00adbility of appli\u00adca\u00adtions from all areas and indus\u00adtries. Recently, we success\u00adfully carried out several hundred appli\u00adca\u00adtion vali\u00adda\u00adtions in the CoLab.<\/p>\n

What else do you have planned for the future?<\/h4>\n

We have also exported our successful recipe for CoLabs to the USA and China, which were have opened in recent weeks (read more about the open\u00adings here<\/a>). Next year, we will be expanding the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture of our robot appli\u00adca\u00adtion centers in Europe. We are contin\u00adu\u00adously devel\u00adoping the CoLab in Hausen and invest in new tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies and experts here. We will soon be able to simplify the changeover into auto\u00admated appli\u00adca\u00adtions for even more customers.<\/p>\n
